Alan Russell, PhD, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, is the Highmark Distinguished Career Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Director of CMU’s Disruptive Health Technology Institute. For the last 25 years, the Russell laboratory has been discovering what can be achieved by exploiting the rich interface of chemistry, biology and materials. Dr. Russell’s work has impacted fields as diverse as chemical and polymer synthesis to tissue engineering and homeland defense. Dr. Russell has pioneered how to make polymers from enzymes and how to incorporate enzymes into bulk polymers. His work has led to the formation of three companies, including Agentase (acquired by FLIR systems) and BHS.
Krzysztof (Kris) Matyjaszewski, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, is the J. C. Warner University Professor of Natural Sciences and Director, Center for Macromolecular Engineering in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. He is an internationally recognized polymer chemist who is highly regarded for his vision, his leadership in education and his many collaborative research efforts that have yielded significant innovations in polymer chemistry. He is perhaps best known for the discovery of atom radical transfer polymerization (ATRP), a novel method of polymer synthesis that has revolutionized the way macromolecules are made. Research in the Matyjaszewski Polymer Group has led to the publication of 17 books, 760 peer-review papers, 42 issued US patents, 28 pending US patent applications and 123 original and derived international patents.
Antonina Simakova, Ph.D., Founder and Director of Research and Development, completed her PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Prof. Matyjaszewski at CMU. Her PhD work focused on the development of novel aqueous ATRP processes for biomedical applications. Previously, she spent two years working in an influenza virus laboratory, studying influenza strain distribution and investigating polyaniline as adsorbent for viruses. Dr. Simakova directs R&D for BHS, overseeing all laboratory operations.
